Japan in November: autumn leaves, and data for the trip
November is peak maple season. Here is where the colour is, what to eat, and how to keep maps and translations working.
November is widely treated as the best month to see Japan. The air is cool and clear, and maple and ginkgo turn red, orange and gold from Tokyo down to Kyoto.
Momiji season
Koyo, the autumn-leaf season, is the week locals and visitors plan around. Busy Tokyo and quieter temple streets in Kyoto both fill with colour, just on slightly different dates as you move south or into the mountains.
Tokyo
Sensō-ji in Asakusa and the Tokyo Skytree are the obvious first stops. For leaves, the ginkgo avenue at Meiji Jingu Gaien — about 146 trees — is the frame people come for when the row turns gold.
Mount Fuji
Lake Kawaguchi and Oishi Park put red maples against the water and, on a clear day, the mountain. The Momiji Corridor walk collects hundreds of maple trees in one path.
Other autumn stops
- Oshino Hakkai: a quiet village of eight spring-fed ponds.
- Korankei, near Nagoya: maples over the stream, often called one of Japan’s best leaf valleys.
- Kyoto: Kiyomizu-dera, with maples over the old stone approaches.
- Osaka: Osaka Castle by day, Dotonbori after dark.
Food while you are there
Autumn menus lean on snow crab and hot shabu-shabu. Some inns and festivals still lend or rent yukata if you want the seasonal dress for an evening out.
Stay online in Japan
Station maps, translation and restaurant queues all assume you have data. A Japan eSIM from Premium Brands installs before you fly, so you are not changing a physical SIM on arrival.
- 4G/5G on the plan’s partner network.
- Install from the email QR code. Keep your home SIM for calls if you want them.
- If the profile fails for a supplier fault, support can replace it or refund it.
Choose the day count and data amount that match the itinerary, then install on Wi-Fi a few hours before departure.
