What is an eSIM? Benefits, limits and how to use one

How an embedded SIM works, what it is good at, where it falls short, and how to buy and use a Premium Brands travel eSIM.

Traveller staying online with a digital eSIM

An eSIM (embedded SIM) is a digital SIM built into the phone. You do not swap a plastic card. You scan a QR code or enter an activation code, and the phone downloads the profile.

Travel eSIMs are popular because they install remotely, keep your home SIM in place, and usually cost less than carrier roaming.

How an eSIM works

After you buy a plan, the provider sends a QR code or activation details. Scanning them downloads the SIM profile onto the phone. From there you choose that line for mobile data. Voice and SMS depend on the plan — most Premium Brands travel plans are data only.

An eSIM is built into the phone, tablet or watch

Advantages

Fast to set up

There is no card to lose or bend. Scan the QR code and the profile is on the phone.

Made for travel

Install it before you fly, or as soon as you land on Wi-Fi. You avoid hunting for a local SIM and skip most roaming charges.

Works alongside your normal number

A dual-SIM phone can keep a physical SIM for calls and messages while the eSIM carries travel data.

Harder to steal as a card

The profile lives in the device, so someone cannot pull a SIM tray and walk off with the line.

Limits

Not every phone supports it

Older and many budget phones have no eSIM. Check Settings for “Add eSIM” before you buy.

Moving phones is not instant

Most profiles install once. Deleting the eSIM to move it can mean you need a replacement. Contact Premium Brands support before you delete anything.

Installation needs internet

Downloading the profile needs Wi-Fi or another working data connection.

Why travellers use a Premium Brands eSIM

  • Install before the flight so you are ready on arrival.
  • Typically far cheaper than international roaming.
  • Coverage across 200+ countries and regions on partner networks.
  • Support by email and WhatsApp if activation or data fails mid-trip.

How to buy one

  • Choose the country or region and a data plan on the Premium Brands eSIM site.
  • Pay online.
  • Open the confirmation email for the QR code and manual setup details.
  • On the phone: Settings → Cellular / Mobile Data (or Connections → SIM manager) → Add eSIM → scan the QR code.
  • At the destination, select this eSIM for mobile data and turn on data roaming for that line.

Using it well

  • Turn on data roaming for the travel eSIM only.
  • Leave roaming off on your home SIM if you want to avoid home-carrier charges.
  • Use Wi-Fi when you can, so the daily or total allowance lasts longer.
  • Do not delete the profile if something looks wrong — write to esim@pbdisolutions.com first.
